The Philadelphia Eleven

On July 29th, the Episcopal Church will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the ordination of its first eleven women priests. All Saints Episcopal Church (110 West Hawthorne Road, Homewood) will hold a special event the evening before this important anniversary.

The Rt. Rev. Glenda S. Curry, Bishop of the Diocese of Alabama, will join us on Sunday, July 28th, at 5:30pm for Eucharist, followed by a showing of "The Philadelphia Eleven," a recent documentary which tells the story of these women. All are welcome to join us. We will have drinks, pizza, popcorn and candy for you.

For questions, please contact The Rev. Cindy Carter, ccarter@allsaintsbhm.org

"The Philadelphia Eleven" is a film by Margo Guernsey and Nikki Bramley about the eleven women who were ordained priests at the Church of the Advocate in Philadelphia in 1974. That was two years before General Convention authorized the ordination of women in 1976. The women ordained were Merrill Bittner, Alla Bozarth-Campbell, Alison Cheek, Emily Hewitt, Carter Heyward, Suzanne Hiatt, Marie Moorefield, Jeanette Piccard, Betty Schiess, Katrina Swanson, and Nancy Wittig.

This film has been in production for eight years because of the challenge of securing financing. In late 2021 a group of laywomen and clergy came together to help build a movement to fund the film from the grassroots. They are known as the “Film Funders Circle.” Over 1,200 individual donors and countless volunteer hours helped finish the production.

We’re excited to welcome our new Nursery Director, Jenni Weikard , who has been part of the All Saints community since 2016. Join us in congratulating her on her new role! From Jenni: I have been a part of the All Saints community since 2016, working primarily in the nursery and supporting our youngest parishioners. Working closely with children inspired me to learn more about how to best support them, and I earned my PhD in child development (with a special focus on play behaviors!) from UAB in 2023. I am passionate about creating a safe, nurturing space where children can grow through play. I am also the mother of two (soon to be three!) wonderful children: Vance (5yo) and Nora(3yo) with Baby Sister expected to join us in July. I am so excited to be stepping into this role to continue to serve in such a wonderful and welcoming community and getting the opportunity to inspire playfulness in your children.
