Avondale Breakfast Ministry

Every Wednesday, at the corner of 41st Street and 2nd Avenue in Avondale, a large group of our homeless or underemployed friends show up to receive breakfast, toiletries and a loving greeting! Regulars like "Terrific Tammy" or "Mocha Mike" gratefully offer hugs and handshakes as they receive much needed supplies and a meal. All Saints parishioners fund this ministry while also taking the time every week to be a part of giving back.

Started in 2019, the Avondale Breakfast Ministry, aka “ABM”, is vital work done by four local parishes to provide a breakfast meal in the Avondale neighborhood. Different churches provide this service Tuesday through Friday at approximately 8:30am. All Saints serves on Wednesdays.

Would you like to get involved? Show up any Wednesday at 8:30am at the corner of 41st and 2nd Avenue South (close to Avondale Brewery). If that schedule doesn't work for you, here are some other ways to help:

  • Donate items for breakfast bags such as packaged cheese crackers, cereal bars, oatmeal pies, box drinks and bottled water.
  • Donate toiletries such as hotel size shampoo, conditioner and body lotion, toothbrushes, travel size toothpaste and deodorant, full length socks and soap.
  • Donate directly to All Saints via check or Realm. *Please be sure to note that the donation is for "ABM".

*Note: You can drop your donation in the "general donation" basket that is near or in the Great Hall depending on activities going on.

Churches that have teams serving other days of the week are St. Thomas, Church of the Ascension, and The Abbey. Each parish provides something a bit different, but it usually includes a hot beverage, a hot breakfast item or sandwich, fresh fruit, bottled water, and shelf-stable snacks. We serve 25-40 friends and visit with them while they enjoy the meal. Some save it for later or take a bag home to a loved one.

The ministry is self-funded currently meaning there is no direct support from the parishes other than the use of facilities for storage and food preparation. We do have a few generous people who donate regularly.

Please be aware of "phishing" emails and texts being sent to All Saints members. Phishing is where a scammer creates fake email addresses or phone numbers to impersonate someone you may know in an attempt to steal money or data. Never reply to, click on, or enter any information if you receive one of these suspicious email messages. Most schemes involve scammers mimicking church staff, typically posing as someone in a position of authority asking you for money transfers or gift cards. Many times, the scammers will manipulate the email address, name, or even the area code of phone numbers, so that it appears to be coming from someone you know. Even if the email or text seems legitimate, if a request seems even remotely “off” or is asking for anything from you, don’t act on it until you confirm it with a phone call ( 205-879-8651 ) or face-to-face conversation with someone at All Saints. One quick way to spot a scammer is to check the email address it came from. No matter the name, look at the email address. Emails from All Saints staff will always end with "@allsaintsbhm.org" (i.e. blandry@allsaintsbhm.org). Some general suggestions: Check sender details carefully. Any suspicious emails or text message should be investigated before replying. Pay attention to the message content, including attachments and URLs. When in doubt, call: If there are questions about any email, do not reply. Instead, pick up the phone and call the main number of your diocesan office or parish. Label it spam: If your email service has the ability, report the email as spam. Here’s how you can report these scams: Report Phishing Attacks: the United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team has an Incident Reporting page to report email phishing, as well as an email to forward them to, at https://www.us-cert.gov/report-phishing . Forward all emails to the Anti Phishing Working group at phishing-report@us-cert.gov . Report text scams to through the Federal Trade Commission’s Complaint Assistant which helps the FTC detect patterns of fraud and abuse.

You are invited to a special event Sunday, May 5, from 4:00pm-5:30pm here at All Saints! This will be a conversation between journalist Beth Shelburne, host of the critically-acclaimed Earwitness podcast about Toforest’s case, and Akeriya “Muffin” Terry, Toforest’s daughter who has been making short videos on Instagram to tell her story of growing up with a father on death row for something he didn’t do. Toforest Johnson, a 50-year-old Black man, has been on Death Row for more than 25 years for a crime he did not commit. Greater Birmingham Ministries is leading a state-wide advocacy campaign with faith-based institutions seeking to support his case and bring him home to his family. Hundreds of Alabama residents and faith leaders – as well as Jefferson County District Attorney Danny Carr, and even the original trial prosecutor - have called for a new trial. But Alabama continues to seek Toforest’s execution. To learn more about the case and how you can help, please visit www.toforestjohnson.com
